CHRISTUS Health continues advancing lung detection through robotic diagnostic procedures

Aug. 1 is World Lung Cancer Day

In recognition of World Lung Cancer Day, CHRISTUS Health is highlighting a milestone in its lung cancer program. CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Health System has completed more than 100 procedures using the Ion Robotic Navigational Bronchoscopy System, an innovative technology that helps physicians detect lung cancer earlier and with greater precision.

The Ion robotic-assisted platform allows physicians to perform highly accurate lung biopsies with minimal risk. It also enables access to hard-to-reach areas of the lung, helping to detect cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages.

“Reaching more than 100 cases with the Ion system reflects our commitment to providing advanced lung care close to home,” said Dr. Lorenzo Leys, pulmonologist at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Health System. “Our team has developed a high level of expertise using robotic bronchoscopy to evaluate suspicious lung nodules with accuracy while minimizing risk for patients. Early detection remains one of our most powerful tools in the fight against lung cancer.”

During the procedure, a thin catheter is inserted through the patient's mouth and airways to reach the targeted areas within the lungs. This approach offers a less invasive alternative to traditional diagnostic methods.

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related death, accounting for about one in every five cancer deaths nationwide.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends annual low-dose CT screening for adults ages 50 to 80 who currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years and have a 20-pack-per-year smoking history. These scans will identify abnormal cells before symptoms appear, offering more treatment options.

Though there may be no symptoms of lung cancer, especially in its early phase, here are some common symptoms:

  • Coughing up blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest discomfort
  • Hoarseness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent respiratory infections, including bronchitis or pneumonia
